Larry Ellison, at his keynote at Oracle Open World 2017, introduced Oracle’s new autonomous database: 18C. This technology seems pretty cool, the autonomous database actually does sound like pretty cool technology: the database runs in a fully automated fashion. That means it’s self-tuning and self-provisioning. Larry Ellison compare it to the auto-pilot on his private plane, “There is no pilot error anymore because there is no pilot. All of the database administrations is fully automated,” he told the keynote audience. The database repairs itself, it can fix the error and move on. Because of this ability, Oracle claims guaranteed availability of 99.995 percent, which Ellison boldly stated was “less than 30 minutes of planned or unplanned downtime” per year.
“Our strategy is really to build the apps, the platform, and the infrastructure and … make sure we get the apps right first,” Hurd said.
